Canadian Oil & Gas History Highlights

1990

The CANADIAN ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CERI), August 20 - "That SADDAM HUSSEIN has miscalculated both Arab and global reaction to the Kuwaiti invasion is clear. Whether an agreement can be negotiated that will allow him to back away from his position without losing face in Baghdad, and hence avoid a potentially devastating military confrontation, remains to be seen."

1991

A senior OPEC delegate the day after the Gulf War ceasefire, February 28 - "Saudi Arabia is now the undisputed economic superpower as far as oil is concerned. It can set oil prices for years to come."

1992

Jake Epp, Federal Energy Minister, May 6 - "Interfering with the rights of Canadians to sell oil and gas businesses does not increase the government's control and carries a cost in terms of efficiencies and lost opportunities."

1993

Gerry Maier, Chairman of TransCanada PipeLines Limited, February 10 - "Existing and proposed transportation capacity cannot provide the degree of service required by the power generation market under the Clean Air Act and the incremental growth in demand by local distribution companies."

1994

Exxon Corp. Spokesperson, February 11 - "This verdict is totally unwarranted and unfair," the company said. "It is excessive by any legal or practical measure."

1995

Anne McLellan, Natural Resources Minister, September 7 - "What we see here is the possibility of benefiting from a possible increase in the price of Petro-Canada shares in the future, and we felt that if there were such an increase, the Canadian taxpayer should participate and benefit from it."

1996

Ralph Klein, Alberta Premier, April 2 - "We are delighted with this news and congratulate the Canadian Association of the World Petroleum Congress on their successful bid. This is the 'Olympics' of the oil and gas business world and will bring millions of dollars into the province. As the hub of Canada's energy industry, Calgary will be a fitting host as it showcases why Alberta is a great place to do business."

1997

Robert Hornung, Climate Change Program Director, Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development, October 22 - "They’re trying to scare the federal government into something that frankly it can’t do and that Canadians won’t want it to do. Canadians are not going to accept - no matter what Ty Lund [Alberta Environmental Protection Minister] says - a situation in Kyoto where every industrialized country signs on to a legally binding treaty and Canada sort of begs off."

1998

Wiebo Ludwig, after Crown drops charges in oilwell blast, September 10 - "I had been prepared to go all the way with this thing and use it (the trial) as an opportunity to present the problems...I don't think we'll ever give up on this fight."
