January 18 Syncrude Canada Ltd. Is formed to take over Cities Service Athabasca Inc.'s sands research program; ownership of the new company is shared by Imperial Oil, Cities Service and Richfield Oil (each with 30%) and Royalite Oil (10%)
April 30 DOB maps Banff Oil Ltd.'s new find at 7-32-109-8 W6M near Rainbow in northern Alberta, rumours estimate the discovery of a six billion barrel oil field and five to 10 trillion cubic feet of gas
July 28 Trans Canada Pipelines (TCPL) announces agreement to sell at least 170 million cubic feet of Canadian gas per day to American Natural Gas Company of Detroit, a big step forward for TCPL's plan to build a pipeline to Eastern Canada and the United States; TCPL and American Natural Gas agree to form Great Lakes Gas Transmission Company
October 8 Shell Canada produces one millionth ton of sulphur at Waterton plant, the largest plant of its type in North America
December 17 J.F. D'Arcy, chairman of Canada's first petroleum exposition, advises industry orders for exhibit space are now being accepted
