January 9 Trans-Prairie Pipelines responds to British Columbia's call for applications to build an oil pipeline from northeastern B.C. to refineries in Vancouver; construction begins on the 1,400-mile Alberta-California gas pipeline project
February 1 Ottawa announces National Oil Policy to increase use of Canadian oil west of the Ottawa Valley
February 20 Montana Power awards Majestic Contractors a contract for a 56-mile pipeline from Carway, Alberta, to Cutbank Montana
June 6 Federal Order in Council abolishes a requirement that Crown reserves must be offered on a cash bonus basis with rights goingto the highest bidder and introduces special Canadianization provisions
July 28 Western Canada largest gas plant opens at Rimbey
August 11 Shell Oil Co. of Canada applies for 11.5 million acres off Vancouver Island and in the Queen Charlotte Islands, the first time Shell engages in offshore activity in Canada
October 4 Canadian Chamber of Commerce asks Ottawa to establish a depletion allowance at 25% of gross production income similar to American allowances
