| Net Earnings (or income) before extraordinary items, less preferred share dividends, divided by average common shares outstanding. Shows how much has been earned by each share, and therefore gives an indication of what is available to be distributed as a dividend. |

| Eastern Zone |
| For rate design purposes, the Eastern Zone encompasses the geographic
area from North Bay to Montreal, including Toronto and southern
Ontario. The National Energy Program assumes that the Eastern Zone will be extended to include the Maritimes when the natural gas pipeline system reaches that region. Within the Eastern Zone, all natural gas distributors pay the same rate for given service. |

| Electric Arc Technology |
| Use of electrical arcs in a furnace to efficiently produce very high temperatures for applications such as metal melting and coating and industrial drying. |

| Electrical Energy |
| Ususally measured in kilowatt-hours, energy delivered by an electrical utility via its transmission/distribution system. For purposes of sale, utilities often classify electrical energy according to the demand placed on the system. |

| Electrical Energy / Interchange |
| Energy received by one electric utility system from another for economy purposes. The energy may be returned in kind at a later time or it may be allowed to accumulate in energy balances until the end of a stated period. Settlement may be by payment or on a pooling basis. |

| Electrical Energy / Off-Peak |
| Energy supplied during periods of relatively low system demand, as specified by the supplier. |

Electrical Energy / On-Peak |
| Energy supplied during periods of relatively high system demand, as specified by the supplier. |

| Electrical Energy / Surplus |
| Energy generated that is beyond the intermediate needs of the system. This energy is frequently obtained form spinning reserve and sold on and interruptible basis. |

| Electricity Production |
| The process of generating electric energy. In this report it includes the amount if such energy, expressed in kilowatt-hours or multiples of kilowatt-hours, that individual generating units or groups of generating units can reasonably be expected to produce in a year. The determination of electric energy production takes into accounbt various factors such as the type of service for which generating units were designed (e.g., peaking or base load) the availability of fuels, the cost of fuels, river water levels, and environmental constraints. |

| Emissions |
| Gases and particulates discharged into the environment, usually the atmosphere. |

| End-User |
| The ulitimate consumer on an energy commodity; often used to differentiate large industrial buyers from wholesalers and distribution companies. |

| Energy Intensity |
| In the industrial and commercial sectors and in transportation other than automobiles energy intensity is defined as the amount of energy per unit of production. In the residential sector it is energy use per household and for automobiles it is energy use per car. A measure of the efficiency with which energy is used in the economy as a whole is total end use energy per unit of GNP. |

| Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) |
| Secondary and tertiary techniques for recovering crude from a pool. Oil is recovered other than by the natural pressure in a reservoir. These methods increase the proportion of oil recovered, but at additional cost. |

| Enriched Uranium |
| Uranium in which the concentration of the fissionable isotope, Uranium-235, has been increased beyond the 0.7% level found in natural uranium. |

| Environmental Impact |
| Any alteration to the environment caused by man and affected human, animal, fish and/or plant life. |

| Established Reserves |
Those mineral reserves recoverable under current technology and present and anticipated economic conditions, specifically proved by drilling, testing or production, plus the continguous recoverable reserves judged to exist from geological, geophysical or similar information, with reasonable certainty.
Initial Established Reserves
Established reserves prior to the deduction of any production.
Remaining Established Reserves
Initial established reserves, less cumulative production.

| Ethane |
| A colourless, odourless hydrocarbon gas (C2H6). One of the constituents of natural gas, ethane is either removed from the gas stream and used as a feedstock for the production of ethylene (via steam cracking), left in the pipeline gas stream, or used in enhanced oil recovery. |

| Ethanol |
| The two-carbon alcohol present in the greatest proportion upon the fermentation of grain and other organic matter, such as potatoes, sugar or timber. Also called ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol. |

| Ethylene |
| First member of the olefin series of hydrocarbons (C2H4), an inflammable gas with a faintly sweet smell. Ethylene is the most important intermediate petrochemical, and is produced from natural gas liquids, naphtha or gas-oil via steam cracking. |

| Crude oil produced from pilot projects designed to investigate new recovery techniques. |

| Exploratory Drilling |
| Drilling carried out to determine whether hydrocarbons are present in a particular
area or structure. |

| Exploratory Well |
| A well drilled in unproved or semi-proved territory for the purpose of ascertaining the presence of a commercial petroleum deposit.

| Export Of Electricity |
| Transfer of power or energy from a utility system in Canada to another in the United States. Such export requires NEB approval. |

| Export Sales As Percentage Of Total Sales |
| Export sales from domestic operations divided by total sales. The ratio indicates exposure to foreign risks, since sales taking place in other countries and other currencies will be affected by foreign currency fluctuations and foreign government policies. |

| Extraordinary Items (Gains or Losses) |
| Gains, losses and provisions for losses that do not arise in the course of normal business activities and are not expected to recur regularly. Extraordinary items should not be included in the evaluation of a company since they are not representative of its operations. |
